About the Summer Equity Grant

Before applying for a Summer Equity Grant (SEG), we strongly encourage students to explore the summer programs and funding opportunities offered by the campus departments listed here.

Note: Summer Equity Grant will be available to Opportunity Fund-eligible students from Friday, May 23 through Friday, May 30 (5PM).

  • Students Will Need to Do the Following:
    • Complete and upload the Summer Equity Grant Spending Spreadsheet listing all expected expenses and sources of funding
    • Submit documentation of expenses (e.g.: lease and bills, housing contracts, etc.). If you do not have a formal lease (e.g.: you are renting from a family member) or if you're living with roommates, please include what you have to verify your living arrangement, a copy of the master lease/mortgage, and complete our sublease agreement form. You need to be able to provide documentation of the housing option you plan on using. Estimates for multiple possible housing options are not acceptable.
    • Students do not need to submit documentation for food expenses. Food costs are calculated based on USDA recommendations for a liberal plan for a male age 19-50 regardless of your gender identity. Visit the USDA website here.
    • Acceptance letter for program. Submit documentation of opportunity that includes length of program (with start and end date), expected hours per week and income (hourly rate or lump sum for stipend), where the program is taking place, and whether the opportunity is in-person, hybrid, or fully remote. If unpaid, documentation should indicate such.
  • Parent Contribution must each be 3,500 or less
  • Can only be used ONCE during summer quarter and the summer opportunity needs to occur between June 16, 2025 to September 12, 2025
    • Students who have not received a grant before and Juniors will be prioritized in our review process.
  • Student must be pursuing a full-time opportunity, whether that is an internship, conducting research (excluding thesis research), participating in a fellowship, or participating in a community service program in the United States
    • The opportunity must be a minimum of 30 hrs per week and must be at least seven weeks of the summer.
  • Living expenses up to $5,000 (this includes food, internet [if required to work remotely at all], utilities, transportation, and rent)
  • Housing/Utilities
    • This includes rent, support for utilities (water, electricity/power, gas, etc.), and any other shared housing expenses
      • If a student is living at home, with family members, friends, or family friends and required to pay rent, then no more than 33% of the rent/utility expenses will be provided. The master lease/mortgage and utility bills will need to be provided along with the sublease agreement to be considered.
  • Food (based on USDA recommendations. See below)
  • Transportation (if needed and with supporting documentation)
    • Local transportation, up to $200 (cost of public transportation, gas, etc. to/from your opportunity and where you're staying)
    • Flights to the location of the opportunity and back home after opportunity concludes, if opportunity is not located in student's home city
  • Wifi accommodations, if required to work remotely (with supporting documentation)
    • If you are living with others, you need to be sharing this cost, unless stated in your lease/sublease agreement that you will be solely responsible for this
  • Family expenses, if the student is NOT living at home
  • Health Insurance Costs*
  • Cancellation Fees associated with housing, transportation, etc.

*Students who receive the Summer Equity Grant can still apply to the Opportunity Fund for other expenses (e.g., computer support, medical/dental expenses, emergency travel, citizenship expenses, etc.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. We cover up to $150 for transportation to and from your opportunity for a typical 10-week opportunity. This can be for weekly/monthly passes for public transportation, gas in a personal vehicle, etc. For any opportunities longer than that, we will add an additional stipend as necessary based on amount of time.

We will cover round-trip ride share costs to/from your home & home airport and destination airport & destination residence, up to $200.

Yes. Unfortunately, the opportunity needs to take place in the United States, though it can be with a company based in another country as long as you don't need to report to the opportunity in person or you're able to report in-person to an office in the United States.

Unfortunately, due to the demand typically seen in the Summer Equity Grant, graduating and returning seniors are the lowest priority and unlikely to receive funding. Incoming co-term students who are currently eligible for the Opportunity Fund would be a lower priority than a continuing undergraduate student. For this reason, all seniors and co-terms are discouraged from applying for the Summer Equity Grant.

It depends. We have every student complete a budget based on their projected living expenses over the summer. If the stipend you received from your opportunity covers all of your living expenses, then you would not be eligible for a Summer Equity Grant. However, if your stipend does not fully cover your living expenses, then you are eligible to apply for additional support from the Summer Equity Grant.

Similar to the Opportunity Fund, you should hear back within 1-3 business days either for additional information/documentation or with a decision. However, it could take up to a week to receive some sort of response.

No! These are separate applications, and if you are eligible for both funds, then your Summer Equity Grant decision will not impact any Opportunity Fund requests.
