Transferring Credits & Academic Best Practices

Upon admission to Stanford, you will receive a Transfer Credit Evaluation from the Office of the Registrar. This document outlines how many units from your previous institution will be accepted toward Stanford’s graduation requirements. It will also indicate whether you have fulfilled the first of two required writing courses. Please note that PWR 2, the second writing requirement, must be completed at Stanford regardless of previous coursework.

Additionally, to ensure a well-rounded academic experience, Stanford requires all undergraduates to complete a designated number of courses in the Ways of Thinking/Ways of Doing general education curriculum. If you enter Stanford with the maximum of 90 transferable units, you will be required to complete five courses across five different Ways categories.

  • Keep in mind that you can complete a PWR 2 course requirement by taking an Intro Seminar that has a Writing 2 component. Nine times out of ten, these Intro Sems are much easier.
  • To be efficient with your academic course load, consider looking at which of your major requirements simultaneously satisfy a Ways requirement. This could help free up your schedule, fulfill multiple requirements at once, and give you more time to focus on other courses or extracurricular activities.
  • Here is a strong template of an email you can use to get credit approval.

Stanford may accept your transfer credits; however, you should contact your respective academic department to determine whether those credits can be applied toward major or minor requirements. Reach out to the department’s Student Services Officer, who can review your transfer coursework and advise on its applicability.

  • Most students need to declare their major by the end of spring quarter of their first year as a transfer student.
  • The process of declaring your major may differ from one major to another. You can reach out to the Transfer Advisor, Ingrid Anderson,  if you need help finding the resources to declare your major
